Public Speaking

It is my pleasure and duty as social individual to enhance my capacity of communicating with others. Practicing public speaking helps developing the skills in better getting your ideas across. In March of 2006 I have decided to join the number one organization in the world that helps developing public speaking and that is Toastmasters International.

Currently I am holding the position of Vice President Public Relations at Brussels Club and I created this webpage to provide you with the information you need if you consider joining a speaking club and increasing your communication and leadership skills.

What is Toastmasters International?

The Toastmasters International organization was founded in the USA in 1924 with the goal to help its members develop the art of public speaking through a practical training program. Over two million persons world wide have already benefited from this practical approach. There is to date over 10,000 clubs in ca. 90 countries around the world.

A typical Toastmaster Club has approximately 20-30 members and meets twice a month. You are offered the opportunity in the friendly, supportive environment of these meetings to deliver short impromptu or longer prepared speeches, to develop new ideas and present them in a confident manner.

The speakers are given an evaluation, i.e. constructive feedback by another club member. That helps the speaker to improve and is an important learning experience for the evaluator as well. Toastmasters is not just for professional speakers; it is for everyone who wants to make a better impression, communicate with higher efficiency and who have the dream of addressing a large audience one day.

Brussels Club

It is the most distinguiesd Toastmasters club in Belgium. It was established in 11/01/1971. Our group gets together twice a month on the first and third Tuesday evenings. The meeting starts promptly at 7:30 pm and generally finishes up around 10:30 pm.

Guests are most welcome to see how a meeting runs and, if interested, can eventually become a member and join the program to improve their speaking and leadership skills. We ask our guests to come by 7:15 so that we can have a club member learn a little about them to make a proper introduction to the group.

We are a very friendly and international group and we have a vibrant club with many excellent speakers from countries around the world. Although the activities and speeches are all in English, we have many members who are not native English speakers.

The cost for our club meetings is EUR 25 and this includes dinner and wine. If you join the club, the cost per year is EUR 75 with a EUR 20 first year subscription fee.

The current venue is in specially arranged "Jean Monnet" room at restaurant l'Atelier, Rue Franklin 28, B-1000, close to round point Schuman. See the location of l'Atelier on the map.

Membership eligibility criteria required

There is a special requirement for our club, which is to pay for your dinner if you have made a reservation and then fail to attend or to cancel by the day before the meeting, as the club has to pay for anyone who does not show.

What is the next step?

Be there as a guest, or I will add you to our guest mailing list so that if our next meeting is not convenient, you will still get a notice about our other meetings. Use the following link to contact me and I hope to see you soon at one of our meetings.
